Approximately 6 million lbs (2,722 tonnes) of hot-dip galvanized wire mats were used to hold together fill material for the retaining wall. The galvanized mats were then covered with concrete wall panels for noise reduction and aesthetic purposes. Due to the corrosive nature of the soils and the road salts sprayed onto the wall, etc., it was necessary to have a corrosion prevention system that held up exceptionally well to these conditions. The state of Utah spent $1.59 billion to rebuild 17 miles (24 km) of Interstate 15, through the Salt Lake City valley. Over five million cubic yards of fill material were used to widen the interstate and install new cross-street interchanges. The design called for galvanized wire mats for retaining walls.
