33rd Street Bridge

In 2006, plans were initiated to renovate the Huey P. Long Bridge, which spans across the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the design stage, the Louisiana Department of Transportation sought a coating system for the steel components of the bridge that would be cost-effective, both in the short and long terms. They were also looking for a functional coating to prevent corrosion of the steel, as more than 50,000 motorists cross the bridge each day.
HDG was their final choice due to its resistance to corrosion as well as the minimal maintenance requirements of the coating. The LA DOT realized shutting down the bridge for repainting procedures or repairs due to corrosion would result in massive indirect costs to business and commerce, not only for New Orleans, but for the surrounding communities as well. The utilization of HDG will minimize the frequency of such repairs that would have been necessary throughout the life cycle of the bridge.
In addition to the corrosive exhaust from vehicles and the usual wear and tear that road structures encounter, the climate in the New Orleans area is a breeding ground for rust and decay. With the Gulf of Mexico in the vicinity, humid and salty air would undoubtedly be relentless in corroding this landmark bridge. Even with paint or powder coating, any nick or scratch in the surface would open the floodgates for widespread and quick deterioration. HDG sets itself apart in this regard, as corrosion in an exposed area will be contained and its spread halted by the surrounding galvanized surface.
As a result, any damage due to motor vehicles will be minimal, and the steel structures will remain intact and free of rust. As time proceeds, and the success of HDG remains on display at the Huey P Long Bridge, the LA DOT will have time-tested evidence that a galvanized coating is the most effective and efficient method of corrosion prevention for future applications, both renovations as well as new construction.
