The Hall's Hill community in Arlington, Virginia began in the 1860s as a home to many freed slaves after the Civil War. As part of a recent community revitalization project, a sculpture was designed for the High View Park to celebrate the values of the original inhabitants. Hot-dip galvanizing was specified because the artist desired a durable, corrosion-free finish that would withstand the elements of the environment and the traffic of the community park.
Extra care was required because of the design and Braille lettering of the womans skirt, which tells the story of the community. The finish had to be smooth over the Braille to allow the history to be read. Hot-dip galvanizing ensures that this sculpture and what it represents will be a long-lasting public symbol for the historical community.
