Situated as a stunning centerpiece in the City of Whitby is the new Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Pedestrian Bridge and Boardwalk. Connecting the expanding trail network of the area, the 80-meter single-span bridge forges key sections of the community while gracefully spanning a sensitive marshland. Complemented by a 145-meter boardwalk, the two structures function as a beautiful symbol of strength and durability, safely guiding hundreds of locals and tourists across seamlessly.
“This bridge was a key target for the City—connecting the trail and community while avoiding environmental impact. With so much public visibility, we needed a finish that looked great and would last for decades. Galvanizing was the only solution that met every need.” — Patrick Magar, Project Manager, Greenspace Construction
When the project members began strategizing the design of the bridge and boardwalk, a few key themes were mentioned. One factor the team considered was aesthetics, making sure the structures would blend harmoniously into its environment. Secondly, the team considered long-term corrosion performance and protection. And lastly, the team wanted a coating protection system that would stand strong long into the future with minimal maintenance costs. It was quickly apparent that hot-dip galvanizing would perform the best for this steel structure compared to paint methods and check all the boxes that the team members were investigating.
One of the project’s most distinctive features is the 80-meter single-span bridge that stands nearly 20 feet tall. The height and length were an impressive feat, and it was pivotal that the galvanizer would be able to handle the size of this material through the galvanizing process. This unique challenge was not a hinderance for the galvanizer, as they were able to communicate with the customer that a progressive dip (or double dip) would be a solution to make sure the entire structure was fully coated. The bridge was fabricated in multiple large sections with bolted splices added specifically to fit the tanks, ensuring maximum coverage of the steel parts. For an added level of safety to visitors, the panels on the boardwalk were designed with treads to help prevent slipping, providing a safe and environmentally responsible solution for visitors.
The galvanizer chosen for the project was able to also offer their years of experience in the industry, providing education on proper venting and draining as well as detailed coordination from start to finish. The project truly took all team members’ coordination and effective communication to meet project deadlines and overcome any obstacles.
The locals and tourists who get the privilege of experiencing the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Pedestrian Bridge and Boardwalk will now be forever connected to recreational paths and neighborhoods, offering safe passage while minimizing environmental disturbance by avoiding the need for multiple support piers in the wetland. They will continue to stand strong decades down the road due to the decision to hot-dip galvanize the steel parts, and it will continue to serve the City of Whitby for many generations to come.
