Unlike any other, the Ferndale Bench weaves in a complex circle in Detroit along Woodward Avenue. The Ferndale Bench was designed by architect Yuji Hsiao and fabricated by metal smith Robert Laskey.
This one of a kind bench's many twist, turns, and gaps increases susceptibility to corrosion. The industrial environment of Detroit also required a resilient protective coating. Mr. Hsiao saw hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) as the best coating system for his park bench. Unsurprisingly, the Ferndale Bench was chosen as a winner in a bench contest. Aware of this award and the importance of corrosion protection, the galvanizer generously donated the HDG for the project. The distinctiveness of the Ferndale Bench has invoked a group effort that enabled HDG to protect it from the corrosivity of time.
