Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox and one of the oldest and most celebrated baseball stadiums in Major League Baseball, is being transformed into a ballpark for the 21st Century. The park, opened in 1912, has been the envy of fans and all of baseball for centuries. To preserve the allure and ensure full fan enjoyment, a multi-year renovation project has commenced with new club seats installed in the left and right field roof areas.

The location, open to the elements during the baseball season and exposed to the harsh New England weather offseason, requires excellent protection against corrosion. Thus, to integrate revenue opportunities for the team, and preserving enjoyment for the fans, hot-dip galvanizing was chosen to maintain the durability of all steel surfaces in the specified areas. Turnaround time, coating performance, visibility, and quality were priorities of this project. Overall, 29 tons of steel were hot-dip galvanized, including structural steel columns, railing, wire mesh panels, clips, and seat supports.

The work needed to be completed from the end of the 2006 baseball season and finished prior to the 2007 opening day. The coating, needed to be durable, and visibly pleasing because of fan handling, and maintain a very high quality finish. The galvanized parts were dipped, then painted with excellent results--pleasing to the eye, and classic in look to preserve the historic nature of Fenway Park. With the success of the project, the park will withstand the elements and its rabid fans for many years and games in the American League, and have excellent protection against corrosion for generations that follow.
