Towering above the tree line near the Madison, MS airport is the Doppler Vortac Tower and Tacan Tower. The Doppler VORTAC tower was built in 2013 to replace an existing VORTAC tower and the TACAN tower was also constructed nearby as part of this project. The VORTAC and TACAN towers will be used by all types of aircraft as a navigation tool for planes coming into or leaving from Bruce Campbell Field. The VORTAC consists of a co-located VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) beacon for civilian and commercial aircraft, and tactical air navigation system (TACAN) beacon for military aircraft. The VORTAC tower stands approximately 90 tall and 150 in diameter. The height of the VORTAC tower allows for better frequency and signal of the navigational aid. The TACAN tower is also 90 tall and will house state of the art navigation technology as well.
The FAA decided to go with a hot-dip galvanized coating system due to its proven durable coating and long life-cycle. Another important factor in their decision was the low maintenance that is required with hot-dip galvanizing. With a painted system, the tower owners would have had not only a continuous maintenance issue on their hands with the tower being exposed to the constant atmospheric elements, but maintenance on the 90 towers would be costly to perform and an unnecessary safety hazard. The life-cycle cost savings galvanizing will provide over the life of this project means taxpayer money will not have to be spent to maintain or even refurbish these towers, and that money can be used for other needed community or state projects.
