Domino Park is a 6 acre park located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn N.Y., it is situated along the East River at the former site of the Domino Sugar Refinery. The park features many activities but a major draw is the Domino Park Playground which was designed by Brooklyn-based artist Mark A Reigelman II. He was approached by Two Trees Management, the owner and operator of the park to bring his design and creativity to the playground. After a lot of research he came up with playground that had 3 main areas, the Sugar Cane Cabin, Sweetwater Silo and the Centrifuge. These three areas are relevant and fixated on the sugar refinery process. “The idea is that children enter the playground as the raw sugar cane and exit as raw sugar. The feedback on Domino Park Playground has been wonderfully positive since it’s opening in June 2018. “You see the parents up there playing with their kids and it’s not because their concerned about the safety of their kids…their having fun.”
Between the stainless steel slides, the brightly painted railings and the galvanized steel this playground not only looks great but will provide kids (and parents) with a safe and fun place to play for many years to come
Due to the location of the playground, Landscape Structures needed to look at ways to control corrosion on this as well as other playgrounds in coastal locations. Realizing galvanizing is one of the best options, The local galvanizer spent a lot of time with Landscape Structures on design, metal selection, various ways of hanging, as well as hole size and locations to ensure a product that not only held up to the elements but looked great and was safe for children to play on. Due to the success of this and other playgrounds, galvanizing has become a part of their product line and is offered all over the world.
