Over the past few years, many pedestrian bridges have been built over busy highways and highly trafficked streets. The South Carolina Department of Transportation built a bridge near an old fort to help keep pedestrians safe from the vehicle traffic in the area. The South Carolina DOT specified the bridge for hot-dip galvanizing because of its maintenance-free corrosion protection.
The bridge will be exposed to salty air from the nearby Atlantic coast, as well as heavy use by walkers, bicyclists, and skateboarders. Hot-dip galvanized steel can withstand the heavy use and corrosive atmosphere without requiring heavy maintenance disrupting traffic. The duplex system will ensure the bridge is a functional and beautiful walkway for the public for many generations.
