The Colorado Rapids Soccer Stadium, properly referred to as Dicks Sporting Goods Park, seats 18,000 people and was opened to the public in April of 2007. The stadium, used mainly for the professional MLS Colorado Rapids, is a facility operating on a nearly year-round basis.
The engineer chose to use hot-dip galvanizing to protect over four million pounds of structural steel used as the stadiums core. In all, 53.5 tons of steel were hot-dip galvanized, including the four lighting tower structures, structural legs, support, and catwalks.
The reasons hot-dip galvanizing was specified for the project include previous the engineers previous galvanizing experience, the appearance of the finished product, and the extensive 25 year warranty serving to protect the steel from corrosion. This total immersion project will provide complete coating protection from the inside out and provide years of corrosion defense and durability that will keep the stadium from the costly repairs of refinishing in years to come.
