Back in 2008, the City of Claremore set out to build its first-ever skate park. With essentially nothing like it in the area, a skate park would create a space for generations of skaters, BMX riders and families to come and experience the city in a new way. Located just off Old Highway 20, the Claremore Skate Park would quickly become a gathering place for locals to enjoy in the warm months.
"The galvanizer had completed some fishing docks and walkways for us in the past. They did a fantastic job, they always do a great job with the product and are a great company with good people to work with." - Joe Kays, City of Claremore
Knowing that the park would endure constant impact from the environment as well as use from skaters, the city made the decision to galvanize the ramp frames, guardrails, light poles and fixture brackets.
The durability of galvanizing the steel members has proven itself with time; nearly 17 years after installation and the coating protection system continues to perform exceptionally well, still meeting all ASTM specifications for thickness and corrosion resistance. Mil readings taken in 2025 recorded an average of 3.58 mils of zinc coating which is impressive after 17 years of services. Plus, according to the zinc coating life predictor, these mil readings indicate the steel in this skate park will last another 80 years further proving the strength and durability of this coating system.
Due to the city’s decision to galvanize, Claremore’s Skate Park has become a safe, accessible and attractive recreational outlet for families in the area for nearly two decades. By choosing galvanizing, the project would experience virtually zero maintenance over the course of the project lifespan, saving money on costly updates and upkeep.
The galvanizer for the project provided the galvanizing as a civic contribution to the area and was able to bring decades of experience as well as a strong partnership with the City of Claremore. Having previous experience with galvanizing local docks and walkways, the City of Claremore knew the galvanizer would be a reliable partner to provide a high-quality finish and long-term value for their investment.
Now, in 2025, the City of Claremore Skate Park continues to boast of its galvanized steel railings and pipes while continuing to welcome old and new skate enthusiasts to the area.
