Located on the shore of Boston Harbor, Castle Island is a 22-acre recreation site and location of Fort Independence. Because of its rich history and designation on the National Register of Historic Places, the area is a popular tourist destination.
In 2010, the railings surrounding the island and fort were in need of repair. The owners had tried to replace the rails once using a paint coating, and it was a terrible failure in the harsh temperate marine environment. Seeking a more durable option, while keeping the desired color, the owner opted to try a duplex system of hot-dip galvanizing and paint. Nearly 50 tons of picket rails were galvanized and painted to blend in the environment at Castle Island. The synergy of the two coatings will ensure the rails stay corrosion-free for generations.
