The Casey Arborway Project involved planning and design alternatives to replace the structurally deficient Casey Overpass viaduct, located above a transit hub in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, with an at-grade solution.
14,000 weekly commuters benefit from the 450 foot canopy's protection.
An important component of the project was to improve conditions for the 14,000 weekly commuters of the Washington Street and Centre Street buses that use the upper busway at the Forest Hills MBTA station.
After several community meetings, the decision was made to construct a canopy to protect the expanded busway from snow and rain. The 450 foot canopy spans the expanded busway area to provide weather protection. The 640,000 pound architecturally significant canopy truss was made in the United States with steel from Pennsylvania and fabricated in Maine., a true “Buy America” project.
Because of the harsh New England weather, and the choice of tubular trusses the designers specified a duplex system of hot-dip galvanizing to protect the interior and exterior of the steel and a factory-applied universal primer. Since there was to be considerable field welding, the topcoat was applied in the field. The miscellaneous items, including railings, signage and related received a factory applied duplex system of hot-dip galvanizing, primer, and topcoat.
