CloseIn this area of high public traffic, corrosion protection was necessary. Using a duplex system, all exposed steel (including railings, wind screens, and passenger shelters were galvanized and then painted.
The large 10 by 4 wind screens required no dip line or runoff so they could fit into specially designed etched glass. The architecturally exposed steel needed hidden or plugged vent holes after galvanizing and before painting. The NJ Transit is taking a new approach to station renovations because of this project all future station rehabilitations will be galvanized and painted using the same specification. The ease of galvanizing and duplex for long-term corrosion protection and low/no maintenance more than justifies any additional up-front costs. Single-source responsibility for the coating system was a big plus, as well as AGA membership.
