When Hurricane Katrina breached the levees in New Orleans, it devastated the citys street car line along with a large portion of the city. Renovation of the trolley system had already began, but a federal grant to the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority supplied funds to install the new traction power poles on the St. Charles line and replace those needed on the Canal St. line.
Duplex coated poles and davit arms continue to be reliable, come rain or high water. The original street cars were green in the St. Charles line, so poles were painted to match, as well as blend with the surrounding area. The project went very smoothly and was on time. Normal humidity in New Orleans is corrosive to steel, so galvanizing the poles, davit arms, and pipe bollards was a smart choice. Canal is the center of New Orleans and has been a major part of the revitalization of New Orleans. The St. Charles and Canal St. lines connect high tourist attractions like the French Quarter and Garden District. IN the future, the Canal St. line will be extended to the cemetery area and to the city park. HDG poles will mean the NORTA can depend on minimum maintenance cost offered by the synergistic effort of the duplex coating.
