Known Distance Targets are used by the military for marksmanship training all over the world. These targets must be rugged and durable. The choice to galvanize the targets came easy to enhance the performance and durability.

Patriot Products LLC caters to the US military needs by customizing designs and building training solutions. Known Distance Targets are one product designed and fabricated by Patriot Products from start to finish. Known Distance Targets are used for marksmanship training at sniper schools. Camp Atterbury is one of many military facilities in the world to use Known Distance Targets. Camp Atterbury is just outside of Edinburgh, Indiana. Known Distance Targets can be manually operated or automated. The automated targets are either wireless or hard wired to control.

The east coast seal teams will train using the Known Distance Targets at Camp Atterbury but other divisions will utilize as well. Every Marine Corp base in the world is utilizing these targets providing a huge impact and growth for the hot dip galvanizing industry. The Indiana National Guard, FBI, Secret Service, Army National Guard, Department of Homeland Security, US Marshals, and US Allies outside of the country are other organizations benefiting from the Known Distance Targets training.

These targets had previously been powder coated. For better corrosion protection, they are now being replaced with galvanized targets. Known Distance Targets are located around in the world and frequently in marine environments. The coating durability was a concern as well as upkeep in many different environments. Galvanizing the targets was innovative to the usage and effectiveness to maintain the same product that can hold up in many different environments. The galvanized coating provides a longer service life than powder coating and reduces the maintenance necessary. 

Patriot Products worked with the galvanizer to develop the best design using hot dip galvanizing. Patriot Products toured the galvanizer’s facility and watched their product be processed to help identify areas for design changes to achieve the best coating outcome and longest service life possible.

Camp Atterbury has at least 100 targets total. Twenty five targets were approved to be replaced at Camp Atterbury. The target replacement has been project based due to time frames, funding available and approval processes. Patriot Products completed the engineering, fabrication of materials, machining, welding, assembly, trucking, erection and installation of the Known Distance Targets.
