North Star BlueScope Steel donates large amounts of steel each year to the nearby Owens Community College's welding program. In 2005, welding students at the college designed three blue heron sculptures as a thank you gift for North Star BlueScope for their continued support of the college and community of Delta.
The sculptures were made from donated steel and then hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection and aesthetic appeal. Hot-dip galvanizing was also chosen because of its environmentally friendly characteristics. The blue heron sculptures were incorporated into other landscape improvements of the steel campus including a ten million gallon pond, walking trails, and rolling hills. The three sculptures represent the company's commitment to the environment, the community, and its own employees. The hot-dip galvanized coating will allow the college students, company employees, and the community to enjoy the beautiful sculptures well into the future.
