The Belmont Station is part of the nations second largest public transportation system. On the average weekday, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) reports over 1.6 million riders using the transportation system. Belmont Station, just north of downtown Chicago, has recently completed a project to improve the way customers enter the station.
With the harsh Chicago winters, the CTA chose to hot-dip galvanize the structural steel to protect it from unsightly corrosion.
The station has a steel stairway that has 40 percent of its steel exposed to the elements. With the harsh Chicago winters, the CTA chose to hot-dip galvanize the structural steel to protect it from unsightly corrosion. The CTA, noting the durability and ease of specifying, has begun to request all its upcoming projects to utilize hot-dip galvanizing.
At Belmont, 85 tons of steel was galvanized, including all the structural components and handrails. The elevator shaft supports were also galvanized to provide maintenance-free life at the busy station. The CTA recognized the quality of the product, and has requested AAA Galvanizing to finish off two more jobs with HDG. In doing so, the CTA will ensure long-lasting corrosion protection for all upcoming structures for many decades to come.
