Beacon Health Memorial Hospital

An extensive expansion and renovation of Beacon Health System’s Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana transformed the facility when work was completed in late 2025. The $232 million, 10-story patient care tower at Memorial Hospital increased the number of adult hospital beds from 249 up to 302, the new patient rooms will be larger and quieter, with features like temperature controls, improved ventilation and more natural light. The intensive care unit will be expanded and remodeled, additionally a new health and lifestyle district will include a wellness facility, apartments and office space. Health system representatives say the “transformational, once in a generation project is designed to enrich the patient, family and visitor experience while meeting the growing healthcare needs of residents in the area for decades to come.

A 2,350-ton project located in South Bend, Indiana was a massive project for the fabricator dealing with changing timelines, the galvanizer and the painting company worked together to manage project delays for on-time deliveries. The project originally had a March timeline for completion, but site delays pushed back the last shipment to site from the paint shop to the end of August. The longest beam measures 60’ and 20,000lbs, giving this project some heft. The galvanizer provided value added services for the fabricator, the masking of material, furnishing and installation of zinc plugs ground flush and setting up/arranging shipping of the steel to the paint shop. Material was painted and delivered to site on multiple loads, once again freight was arranged by the galvanizer’s Inside Sales/Project Manager, shipping from the paint shop to the jobsite in South Bend. A successful project with many moving parts, the galvanizer and the paint shop stored multiple loads for a number of weeks prior to shipping material, the fabricator, galvanizer and paint shop worked closely together to deliver the results needed to complete the project on time.
