85 years after the first opening in 1936, American Legion Memorial Stadium has completed a total reconstruction and reopened in June of 2021. This stadium was originally dedicated to honor World War I Veterans and is a historic landmark in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was also a result of a program put into place by President Roosevelt called the Works Progress Administration which was a public works program. The reconstructed stadium will hold 10,500 people and will host soccer games for the USL's Charlotte Independence and other large outdoor events. The reconstruction also included additional sculptures to continue to honor the veteran from World War I.
This stadium was originally dedicated to honor World War I Veterans and is a historic landmark in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was also a result of a program put into place by President Roosevelt. The galvanizing for the project started in the summer of 2020 and continued into May of 2021.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for several pieces of the reconstructed stadium. The first chosen piece was the stadium handrails that go down each isle of the stadium stairs. Next was the large concession buildings that have galvanized columns, and steel framing to protect the exposed outdoor buildings for many years to come. Next was the gates and rails surrounding the playing field, keeping the crowd above and closed off from the field.
The galvanizing for the project started in the summer of 2020 and continued into May of 2021. The project was staged at the galvanizer for easy shipment to the downtown location when steel members were needed onsite. The galvanizing steel appearance became very appealing when the stadium turf was installed along with the finishing stadium touches and the job was completed. The future service life will play a large role for a stadium that has just been reopened after 85 years of service.
