The steel sculpture is a permanent fixture on the plaza of One uCity Square. The form of the vertical fins is supported by a galvanized steel core sandwiched by multiple layers of bent wood. The structure of the three separate canopies above is also made of galvanized steel layered with woven recycled plastic rope, creating dappled shading below. The fins are grouped in different sizes and bend in different directions to encourage movement in and through and gathering of different sizes beneath the canopy. Natural materials and traditional textures contrast the high technology of the steel to create an iconic piece. The sculpture explores the intersection of industrial materials and organic forms to create visually striking compositions that challenge the viewer's perceptions of the natural and manmade worlds.
“Ascendance was inspired by the diverse communities and cultures of West Philadelphia, past and present, and is designed to be a welcoming, functioning and iconic gathering point.” -uCity Square
The sculpture was designed to fit in the galvanizers kettle. The sculpture was made with the forethought of the hot-dip galvanizing process with consideration to the size, possible warping and placement of holes for drainage, all for an outstanding galvanizing and 2-part epoxy paint finish.
The goal was to take steel, a rigid hard material, and give it a sense of movement and fluidity. The sculpture is galvanized and coated in 2-part epoxy blue and brown finish. The architect likes to use bright colors to make their work stand out from the landscape. The galvanizer has been working closely with the design team throughout the project for a seamless experience, culminating in a lasting impact due to the durability and corrosion performance of the hot-dip galvanized coating.
