The Safeway grocery store in the heart of our nations capital was very wary of a project that would have to be continuously maintained over the years. With the store being located on a busy street and it having a busy storefront they did not want the headache of having to do repair work and inconvenience people with construction zones and traffic delays.
Galvanizing was the first option they thought of for this project. Adding the duplex system and painting the steel black was big so they could match the color scheme of their logo. The duplex system will also help maximize the longevity of the canopy. Just choosing to paint the canopy steel black had many drawbacks. The possibility of rust bleeding onto the pavement was something they wanted to avoided all together. The Handrail on the back-end of the store was galvanized but did not get painted. That Handrail acts as a guide for an exit to a street and neighborhood located behind the grocery store.
