The Venus Underwater Observatory is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island. Its instrument platforms connect the seafloor to the internet via two-way real-time communications.
Each Venus supports multiple instrument panels including echosounders, hydrophones, sonar devices, acoustic dopplars, siesometers, and still and video cameras, along with sensors that measure the depth, temperature, current, chemicals, and plankton in the localized area.
Since the observatory is located in a harsh marine environment, hot-dip galvanizing was chosen to provide durable, long-lasting corrosion protection. Because the structure utilizes a duplex system of paint over galvanized steel, the observatory will last 1.5 times longer than the sum of the individual life expectancy for galvanized and painted elements. Since HDG steel is 100% recyclable, it provides a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to protect the observatory for decades.
