The corrosive environment of Vent Building Four dictated the use of an outstanding protection system. The location, within 300 yards (274 m) of the ocean, causes extreme potential for corrosion from the outside environment. Additionally, since the building is designed to remove pollutants from an underground tunnel, the interior steel needed protection, too. The galvanizer met the owner's mandate of a 50-year life. And, not only was the cost of the galvanizing less expensive initially, it was also less expensive over the life of the project.
