The newly renovated steam plant, on the banks of the Mississippi River near downtown Minneapolis, now provides dependable steam heat for 18 million square feet of U of M campus buildings. The plant utilizes an underground transport system to carry coal from the railroad siding to the power plant. Nearly one mile of conveyor frames and many different handrails, caged ladders, platforms and structural supports were galvanized. The harsh environment in the tunnels with sauna-like air and wet limestone necessitated the use of hot dip galvanizing to ensure long term corrosion protection.
