The Tree Farm Building is a six story 41,000 square foot wood framed, mixed use building wrapped with 54 steel planters. Each planter weighs approximately one metric ton with soil and trees included. An "exoskeleton of tube steel" supports the knife plates that allow each planter to be hung without creating load bearing issues on the wood framed building itself.

These planters serve as signature elements on the Tree Farm Building which was hand painted with a flowery exterior by design consultant Jeanne Marie Werle. This building is located in the central east side district of Portland Oregon at the head of the Morrison bridge which serves as a gateway to the heart of downtown Portland.

Erection of the planters by Cascade Erectors and Pro-Teck construction was a challenge due to the close proximity to the Morrison Bridge, surrounding buildings and nearby businesses. Galvanized steel was chosen for these planters for several reasons. The planters are totally exposed to the inclement elements of Portland's weather system and due to the close proximity mentioned, maintenance will be difficult and costly.

In addition to the beautiful strawberry trees, each planter contains LED lighting, fire suppression sprinklers and an elaborate watering system to sustain the trees. The building itself is wrapped at the tree line with a sensitive heat detection system which would trigger the sprinklers in the unlikely event one or more of the trees were to catch fire.
