Keeping bunks clean for over 31 years, Dahlgren Steel Fabrication dba S&W Welding has been supplying the Super Blow-Hard Bunk Cleaner internationally to feedlot operators as a system capable of clearing snow, rainwater, and wet feed all while ensuring cattle maintain consistent access to clean food. On the surface, this system may seem like another piece of livestock equipment, but year after year it has proved that reliable bunk cleaning directly supports the food chain, helping farmers keep their herds healthy and up to weight.
Knowing that this essential equipment is used in rural areas, it's paramount to consider a coating protection system that can handle the constant exposure to dirt, moisture and corrosion that would eat away at the steel. Using paint as a main source of coating protection flaked or rubbed off after a short period of time.
A more robust solution emerged when a sales team member from a nearby galvanizer suggested trying hot-dip galvanizing. Testing the process on just one bunk cleaner proved to be a turning point by demonstrating a level of protection that would ultimately change their production approach and make galvanizing a part of their future products going forward. S&W Welding was extremely impressed by the high-quality, durable coating that the galvanizing process delivered.
Hot-dip galvanizing stood as a clear choice for their products moving forward due to its ability to withstand harsh environments and provide a durable, corrosion-resistant finish that will last decades with minimal maintenance. About 95% of the product components are now galvanized including the housing frame, bolt-on cone, sand trout and blower spout.
Working closely with the galvanizer the team was able to strategize and carefully plan the vent and drain hole placement on the material as well as proper dip orientation. The galvanizer was able to offer S&W Welding quick turnaround times as well to meet all the project deadlines with ease.
It goes without saying, farmers rely on their equipment to perform an extended service year after year with minimal maintenance. Hot-dip galvanizing was able to answer the call and provide the protection needed to last for decades down the road while saving these operators money and time they could be spending on their livestock and out in the field. Time is money in the farming industry, and galvanizing provided just that.
