Smithtown High School West Campus and PSE&G are participating in an energy performance project that just installed 3 acres of solar canopies throughout the school’s parking lot. With 5,422 solar modules, it will generate 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. Also with energy performance, the canopies are equipped with charging stations for electric cars. This project will be currently the largest solar carport system owned by a school district in New York State. These canopies will save the school district $1 million annually in energy cost that will reallocated back into education programs.
“By cutting back energy costs, it’s really the kids who benefit most. And that’s what motivates us to take on these big challenges — big rewards for our community.”
These solar canopies are all constructed from 600 tons of hot-dip galvanized Anchor Bolts, Steel Columns, Steel Tube Arms and Purlins. The heavy W27x68 x 15 ’tall columns and 38’ -50’ long purlins created longer spans to use very little parking spaces. Each Canopy the galvanizer turned around a truck load of steel every 24 hours for a seamless installation for the General Contractor. This will be the largest Solar Canopy project that the galvanizer has done to date.
