When the car center was completed in 2005, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had the 3rd largest rental car market in the US. The new facility, a 2.5 million square foot, 5,600 car parking structure consolidated all the rental car companies into one location.
The new facility was designed as pre-engineered building, and hot-dip galvanized steel was chosen for the long spans of the saw-tooth roof concept. Hot-dip galvanizing was the most economical choice both initially and over the life-cycle of the garage. Additionally, because the job site had limited area for lay downs, the galvanizer staged the job at his location and provided just in time delivery to the site. The cost coupled with this efficient turnaround time and corrosion performance made hot-dip galvanizing the logical choice for the car center.
