With the enormous political pressure to act quickly, a shuttered pharmaceutical plant in the city of Toronto was selected rather than a greenfield project. This facility however needed to be rebuilt from the ground up and thus lay the challenge for hot-dip. Galvanizing was clearly a beneficial selection from the initial cost and lifecycle cost points of view, but timeline took precedence over all other considerations in 2021.
Hot-dip galvanizing proved it has the fast-track merits in this complex and urgent pharmaceutical project. The new capabilities of cutting-edge galvanizers are expanding the scope of HDG in challenging projects and environments like never before.
Fortunately, the fabricator and galvanizer were able to convince the project managers that not only was hot-dip galvanizing the best solution in terms of cost (initial and long-term) but thanks to the high capacity of the galvanizer and the quick technical coordination between galvanizer, engineer and fabricating firms, HDG would also far outperform alternatives on the construction timeline. Additionally, the extra robust nature of the HDG coating saved additional time during erection as rough handling didn't require endless on-site coating repairs as would typically happen with painted coatings.
Amazingly the facility was delivered to Sanofi in late 2023, only 18 months after groundbreaking, quite a feat for a CL2-LS biohazard facility. Hot-dip galvanizing was part of this successful fast track construction project thanks to high-capacity plants, deep technical skill levels to pre-approve steel components for galvanizing suitability as well as the proven rugged strength of hot-dip galvanized steel itself.
