This project involved a series of additions, extensions and alterations to the existing mill. The project consisted of adding processing equipment, expanding concentrate storage, extending the coarse ore stockpile building, and erecting a four-story, 80-room complex to house the larger workforce.
Galvanized steel is often the logical choice and practical solution to building in isolated and inhospitable environments
Building components used in the extension include over 330 tons (300 tonnes) of primary structural steel, 60 tons (54 tonnes) of galvanized secondary steel supplied as purlins, girts, misc. building components, and over 400,000 sq. ft. of coil-coated roofing and wall cladding. Galvanized cable trays are also playing a supporting role at the Red Dog Mine. Carrying miles of power cables and lines for process control, steel cable trays were galvanized to provide trouble-free service. With over 50 years of experience in building and operating mines, the owner insists on using building systems and construction materials that can be easily erected at the site to provide safe, maintenance-free structures. Galvanized steel is often the logical choice and practical solution to building in isolated and inhospitable environments, commonplace in Arctic mines. Galvanized coatings withstand impact and resist abrasion better than other coatings, and they shield underlying steel from physical damage. The combination of steel and zinc provides unmatched economy, versatility, and strength, in addition to unsurpassed corrosion prevention.
