Studio 804 is a design/build program at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Planning. As a final, single semester comprehensive experience, Studio 804 provides students with critical knowledge that prepares them for their future work as young architects in a rapidly changing and challenging profession. The vehicle used for this exhaustive experience is the design and development of an affordable building during which students explore and develop architectural solutions which promote efficiency, sustainability, and creative use of materials.

This project marks the sixth residence built in Kansas City, KS by Studio 804, and has posed some interesting challenges. In light of the countrys current economic situation, affordability has become a crucial issue in American housing, and thus something we are taking very seriously. In addition to pursuing LEED Platinum Certification, Studio 804 aims to achieve Passive House Certification as well.
The functional areas that were chosen to be galvanized, including hand rails, stair stringers, and window louvers, required a tough coating to that would require little to no maintenance. The customer preferred hot-dip galvanizing to other coating systems because of the longevity of the coating, the ease to modify pieces during installation, and the fitting look of the natural zinc patina within the building. HDG was also chosen in order to show the surrounding community that it is possible to create a stylish, environmentally friendly, and sustainable structure that is cost effective and will remain visibly pleasing for years to come.
