In 2002, galvanizing emerged as the preferred coating for seven miles (11 kilometers) and 375 tons (340 tonnes) of handrail at PNC Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. A swift and efficient turnaround time of 24 to 72 hours for hot-dip galvanizing was imperative to meet the accelerated construction schedule. This demand for speed and effectiveness was fulfilled by the galvanizing process. The technique seamlessly accommodated the contractors' requirements, allowing on-site modifications, cutting, and re-welding of many pieces. Besides providing an aesthetically pleasing contrast to the stadium's dark navy and red brick colors, galvanizing was economically advantageous with competitive initial costs and virtually non-existent maintenance expenses over the ballpark's lifespan. Given Pittsburgh's challenging climate and wear-and-tear factors, hot-dip galvanizing emerged as the optimal corrosion prevention system.
Our maintenance team still does not have to address replacing handrail in the stadium due to this galvanized protection.
In 2023, PNC Park retains its pivotal role in Pittsburgh's cultural and economic landscape as the esteemed home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Beyond its status as a sports venue, the stadium remains a cultural icon, symbolizing the city's identity with its scenic views and nods to industrial history. Economically, PNC Park continues to be a significant contributor to the local economy, generating revenue through ticket sales, merchandise, and concessions, while also attracting tourism and fostering community engagement. Notably, the stadium has played a vital role in the ongoing revitalization of Pittsburgh's waterfront and broader urban development.
Recognizing the importance of galvanizing in ensuring the structural integrity of handrails used by thousands of fans annually, engineers deemed it a necessity. Galvanizing handrails is an industry standard, and the exceptional quality has consistently stood out.
A statement from the PNC park maintenance dept. "PNC Park chose to galvanize its handrail to protect them from corrosion 21 years ago. That handrail still stands to this day. Other than small worn areas on the top rail from thousands of hands, no more than 5% of the total surface area has started to rust. Our maintenance team still does not have to address replacing handrail in the stadium due to this galvanized protection."
