Pals Sudden Service is the first restaurant to receive the prestigious Malcom Baldridge National Quality Award. These sculptures, at the main entrance to their corporate headquarters, represent the companys menu items. Even more importantly they also artistically represent Pals commitment to creativity and quality that is unique in the fast food industry.
Using hot-dip galvanizing was critically important to eliminating the corrosion...
Over the years the painted sculptures, originally fabricated by Tony and Karen Barone, had corroded in the harsh Virginia weather. Many in the Pals organization felt they should be scrapped as their appearance no longer represented Pals commitment to quality. Mr. Thom Crosby, Pals CEO, agreed that they no longer properly represented Pals, but felt that these iconic and historic art pieces should salvaged if at all possible. Looking for a long term solution to the corrosion issue, Mr. Crosby contacted the local galvanizer in Bristol.
Representatives met with Mr. Crosby at the site and found that these sculptures were delicate and complex fabrications. It was suggested that, with special handling and additional venting, they could be returned to their original appearance. Mr. Crosby agreed and commissioned the galvanizer to start the process, noting that the final appearance was most important. Using hot-dip galvanizing was critically important to eliminating the corrosion experienced with the original un-galvanized fabrications. The old paint was removed with light sandblasting and the rust was removed by pickling. They were then galvanized and repainted. The result is that the iconic sculptures were saved and will again properly represent Pals commitment to quality in the future.
