The time capsule was buried with the intent to be unearthed in 50 years to celebrate 250 years of history. The coating for this project had to be at least 6 mils to be confident the capsule would remain in good condition, and will serve as an excellent future case study for hot-dip galvanized steel. Pictures from school children, local historical documents, war veterans memorabiloia, and more were placed inside. Congressman, county executives, and town politicians presided over the burial ceremony. The capsule was buried at the Oriskany Battlefield Historical Park. Hot-dip galvanized steel prolongs the life of steel buried in soil significantly, and is an excellent choice to withstand the constant moisture, acidity, temperature, and other corrosive conditions engendered by soil.
