Nilai Horse

In 1997, a new galvanizing plant was built in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia and shortly after new mascots would grace the property. The impressive creations were made of cut-outs and waste from the metal process at the galvanizer’s sister fabrication company. An employee at the time welded the pieces together to form two steel horses that continue standing on the property 28 years later.

These steel horses are situated in a highly corrosive setting. The plant is located in a warm, humid – sometime oppressive environment. Nilai receives over 80 inches of rainfall annually with average temperatures nearing 80 degrees and average monthly humidity of 80% or higher. In addition, the industrial environment of the galvanizing facility creates even more corrosion concerns.

The two horses received different corrosion protection treatments to compare galvanizing performance over a long duration compared to painting. Today, you can see the painted horse is now extremely rusty compared to the galvanized horse. Coating thickness measurements were taken in 2025 from the top part of the horse’s body to the legs in order to evaluate the performance of the galvanized coating. The measurements taken in µm were converted to mils to understand the remaining coating thickness after 28 years exposed to the elements. An impressive average of 3.09 mils remain on the horse indicating several decades of life remains.
