Material handling requires innovation, precise movement, and durable products to ensure that even the toughest jobs can be completed on schedule. The mining industry uses conveyors to process and move large amounts of material to different locations. The corrosive properties of this material can attack and deteriorate metal components of the conveyor. Masaba, Inc. solves this problem by protecting the steel with hot-dip galvanizing. They found hot-dip galvanizing performs better than paint coatings in corrosive environments and increases product value by extending the life of the structural components.
Masaba plans to continue using hot-dip galvanizing to protect their products because it helps them achieve their goal of manufacturing the longest lasting equipment.
Masaba, Inc., a U.S. manufacturer of bulk material handling solutions, was formed in 1962 by Harold Higman, Jr., with a mission to design and build rugged equipment to withstand the demanding environments of the mining and aggregate industry. Harold’s son Jerad Higman took over the company in 1999. Masaba’s wide range of products include stationary and portable crushing, screening & wash plants as well as a complete line of conveyors, surge bins and feeder hoppers, all designed and manufactured specific to the customer’s needs.
Masaba worked with Turnkey Processing Solutions (TPS) in 2018 to design and build a 28 Ton, 36” x 190’ telescoping conveyor intended to stack corrosive materials in programmable pile sizes and shapes. The Masaba Magnum Telescoping Conveyor, with its patented drive track technology, provides constant positive traction and the smoothest operation of any telescoping conveyor, making it the safest and most durable in the industry. Combined with the user-friendly touch-screen PLC with multiple options for stockpile selection, the Masaba Magnum was the equipment of choice for Turnkey Process Solutions’ project.
TPS needed to protect the numerous structural and mechanical steel components in the conveyor with a coating that could withstand the corrosive environment of the frac sand mining industry. Hot-dip galvanizing was selected due to its corrosion protection, durability and maintenance free qualities. During the design phase of this project, the group realized the larger, structural components would not fit in the galvanizing kettle. They decided to segment these components to reduce weldment sizes so they could use hot-dip galvanizing over an alternative coating. The galvanizer also carefully watched for air cavities to ensure optimal quality was achieved.
Along with the Masaba Magnum, multiple Masaba portable radial stacker conveyors complete the industrial processing application setup. Not only is the galvanized equipment visually appealing, the rugged equipment design, along with the hot-dip galvanized steel, creates a sustainable, virtually maintenance-free material handling solution. Masaba plans to continue using hot-dip galvanizing to protect their products because it helps them achieve their goal of manufacturing the longest lasting equipment.
