After more than a decade of planning, a complete redesign and 18 months of construction, phase 1 of the Madison Metro BRT Line is complete with 45 shelter stations. The new stations are equipped with benches, heaters and overhead covering. Each contains a farebox where riders can reload their cards with cash, and real time tracking to give minute-by-minute updates on when passengers can expect the buses to arrive. They’re also raised off the ground, allowing for easier accessibility on and off the bus.
“We are able to get the corrosion protection we need and the color we want with a duplex system”
Stations for phase 1 of the city’s bus rapid transit system have been constructed along East Washington Avenue, University Avenue and Mineral Point Road. The 45 stations became operational in the fall of 2024. Each station is constructed with tube steel members that were hot-dip galvanized and painted after galvanizing. Since the steel members are AESS it was important for the fabricator to work closely with the galvanizer for vent and drain hole locations and sizes to make the project a success. A duplex system was specified to give the city the best of both worlds, the corrosion protection they need and the color that they want!
