The wintertime restoration took six months — just in time for Memorial Day.
Since its construction in 1986, the Giant Wheel has served as Ocean City's backdrop of carnival music, surf, sand and glistening wafts of funnel cakes and french fries. In the last three decades, over 3.2 million visitors took a spin on the Giant Wheel.
Ocean City's epicenter of childhood and round-shaped wonder — the beloved Jolly Roger Giant Wheel — was finished and returned to the pier by the end of April, just end time for the Parks opening Memorial Day 2018.
Last September, Jolly Roger dismantled and sent the wheel up to Klingerstown, Pennsylvania, where Big B Manufacturing updated and galvanized the 108-foot ride.
Each piece of machinery was detached and hot-dip galvanized to make the exterior corrosion-resistant and protected from wear, tear and beachfront abrasion. After being galvanized and painted, the Giant Wheel got put back together by hand piece by piece.
