In the last 20 years, the INEOS Project ONE stands as Europe’s most significant petrochemical investments. Located in Port of Antwerp, this $4-billion ethane cracker will produce 1.5 million MT of ethylene annually. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, the project will strengthen Europe’s chemical industry and support long-term economic growth. Even better, Project ONE will operate with a CO₂ footprint 50% lower than the next-best cracker in Europe. This will allow for the transition to zero-carbon operations in the future through low-carbon hydrogen.
"IGCP’s performance and quality exceeded expectations of AG&P and INEOS." - Franceso San Filippo, Ineos
AG&P in the Philippines fabricated 6,600 MT of steel modules. Knowing that the facility would endure a highly corrosive port environment, the steel needed a coating protection system that would not only be durable and lasting but also sustainable with little maintenance. For this type of project, it is paramount for operations to continue for decades with little interruptions. It was clear that hot-dip galvanizing would perform the best under these circumstances and prove to be the best solution for the project.
The galvanizer chosen for the project was chosen for its large capacity, capability, and ability to meet the strict EN ISO 1461 standards required by INEOS. Galvanizing thousands of beams, angles, channels and plates, they were able to achieve consistent quality and a uniform coating the customer would be proud of.
When it came to challenges through the process, the daily movement of hundreds of fabricated components created logistical challenges in tracking, identification, and dispatch. To streamline this complex process, the galvanizer works alongside AG&P to implement an integrated Quality Assurance approach, placing AG&P personnel onsite at the galvanizer’s facility to monitor and verify each component throughout the galvanizing cycle. This adaptation ensured that there would be accurate sequencing, minimal delays, and ultimately reach the highest standard required for module assembly. The galvanizer was able to be a trusted source of education for the customer, leading the way in quality and performance while exceeding expectations.
By providing long-term protection, enhanced sustainability, and dependable performance in a harsh marine-industrial environment, hot-dip galvanizing will continue to play a critical role in ensuring Project ONE’s reliability for generations to come.
