Through the efforts of the Houston Downtown Management Association, a concentrated effort has been ongoing to beautify the city streets. Consequently, it was determined that the nostalgic pole design used by the city was to be protected by zinc and either an application of paint or powder coating over the zinc.
Previous use of a duplex coating by the city had proven the durability of paint/powder over galvanizing and the city was especially pleased with the smooth appearance. Although the initial cost of the duplex coating was higher than galvanizing or paint/powder individually, the city recognized and quantified the long-term savings that this synergistic coating delivers. Working closely with the city, the galvanizer was able to clearly understand the galvanized coating requirements and effectively coordinate with the paint/powder coating contractor to arrange timely delivery of the light and signal poles.
