As thousands of baseball fans mill in and out of the Goodyear Ballpark, the sleek, modern metallic awnings, stairs, and railings will keep the stadium looking as attractive as the day it opened. The ballpark is part of a 75-year master plan incorporating walking paths, retail shops, and picnic areas, taking a big league approach to developing a Cactus league facility. The ballpark is used by two major league teams, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians for spring training.
The architects used a combination of wood, concrete, and galvanized steel for a clean, impressive look that was cost effective and very low maintenance. Galvanized steel was used to protect distinctive features, such as the free-stand steel awnings with fabric shades that provide shelter from the sun down the base lines and the main entrance lettering composed of tubular and solid steel lettering. More than 500,000 lbs. of structural steel, tubular steel awnings, stairs, and tubular roof trusses were galvanized.
The zinc coating created during the galvanizing process will protect these important stadium elements from constant exposure to the glaring sun and corrosive rains, in addition to the daily nicks and abrasions inherent with crowds of people filing through on a regular basis. The barrier and cathodic protection of the galvanized coating is highly durable, and will last 75+ years without maintenance in the Arizona climate.
Unlike corrosion protection systems like paint, which require regular maintenance throughout the life of the project, the initial cost of hot-dip galvanized steel is the only cost for the first 75 years. To fulfill the goals of the master plan, the life-cycle cost comparison convinced Goodyear city officials galvanized steel was the wisest choice for these stadium upgrades.
A city of 60,000 Goodyear is becoming increasingly environmentally conscious and the rapid growth of Goodyear has prompted city planners toward sustainable solutions for the future. Galvanized steel, which uses 100% natural, recyclable zinc for corrosion protection, helps meet this goal with little or no environmental impact. Because of the maintenance-free nature of galvanized steel, no energy or additional maintenance will be wasted on repetitive maintenance. This 10,000 seat, $108 million stadium is taking advantage of the most durable, attractive and sustainable solution available for corrosion protection, ensuring this stadium will be accommodating sports entertainment for generations.
