The Goat Island Bridge is a heavily-travelled tourist bridge, and the rehabilitation needed to be finished in time for summer traffic. The bridge work was done over the winter, in spite of the Buffalo, New York winter; thus all the materials used needed to be able to withstand the conditions. The bridge sets just a few hundred feet from the edge of the Falls and is exposed to not only the harsh winter conditions, but also the spray of white water running underneath. The bridge and walkways utilized hot-dip galvanized steel exodermic decking for both its structural efficiency and lower cost. The galvanized deck system ensures the bridge and its walkways will remain safe for generations of visitors.
