Dellwood Brook Dam was constructed in the 1960s, with very little maintenance or capital upgrades in the interim. The main goal of this project was to bring the site up to current standards for operability, maintainability, and public safety while also recognizing that this small site would continue to be rural, remote, and un-manned.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its durability & robustness, its ability to withstand bump and abrasion damage, and its very low ongoing maintenance costs.
Dellwood Brook Dam consists of a main embankment dam, a low level gated outlet, and a small radial gate spillway. Dellwood Reservoir provides domestic water for adjacent communities and a nearby potash mine. It is also the terminal reservoir on the Saskatoon South East Water Supply System (SSEWSS) and is filled both with natural drainage and via canal with water originating at Lake Diefenbaker in Central Saskatchewan.
Numerous upgrades were made at site to improve operability, maintainability, and public safety including a stoplog monorail hoist, stoplog and stoplog lifter racking system, public safety handrails, signage and chain-link fencing.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its durability & robustness, its ability to withstand bump and abrasion damage, and its very low ongoing maintenance costs. This aligns very well with the operational strategy for the site where Operators visit the site periodically to adjust gate settings as part of their normal rounds. These Operators do not have the time or budget to inspect or repair corrosion-related damage during their rounds and the remote nature of this site means that calling a painting contractor to site to do these repairs is comparatively expensive due to mobilization costs.
