The unique rail system at Deer Pointe traverses a hillside providing passengers with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains of Deer Valley and nearby Jordanelle Reservoir. The Hilltrac is an enclosed heated ski lift for passengers leaving the ski slopes to return to their residences high atop the ridge at Deer Pointe.
The railway is fabricated completely of hot dip galvanized triangular truss sections fitted with a rack drive assembly down the center of the track for cart propulsion.
Inspired by an electric car technology drive system, the cart is designed to keep passengers comfortable while anticipating gradient changes and countering horizontal forces all while ensuring the cabin is level even when climbing steeply. The railway is fabricated completely of hot dip galvanized triangular truss sections fitted with a rack drive assembly down the center of the track for cart propulsion. The track is suspended on multiple piers which are also galvanized keeping the rail sections off the ground. The track of 450 feet runs a slope not very accessible to walking, let alone hiking up the rugged terrain.
The coating chosen for this structure needed to sustain itself for a lifetime given the design and steepness of track at almost 30 degrees. For the engineers, hot dip galvanizing was the best method of providing such corrosion protection as it provided superior adhesion, abrasion resistance, and cathodic characteristics. They could rest assured that there would not be the need of meticulous painting or attention to coating maintenance for the life of the structure. Ski in and ski out access is a prime feature to mountain properties near ski resorts. The Hilltrac system not only provides this feature, but adds an element of attractiveness and sophistication as it sits handsomely with its hot dip galvanized finish among some of the most picturesque views in the world. It should serve its passengers for a multitude of seasons thanks to the protection provided by hot dip galvanizing.
