"This gate will stand for generations, we hope those who pass through it feel the weight of history and the beauty of remembrance.'' Robert Thomas
The Woodland Cemetery Gate Project is a powerful symbol of Clemson's University's history and heritage. The gate serves as a reminder of the Clemson family, the faculty who dedicated their lives to the university, and the more than 500 unmarked graves within Woodland Cemetery -many of which are believed to be those of African American enslaved individuals. The project ensures that these lives are now honored with dignity and permanence. Designed and forged by Robert Thomas Iron Design in Charleston, SC. The gate represents both artistic craftsmanship and thoughtful symbolism. Robert Thomas is an advocate for hot-dip galvanizing, recognized the importance of creating a structure that would stand the test of time while embodying Clemson's traditions. By incorporating galvanizing into the project, the design achieves both beauty and unmatched durability, ensuring that future generations can continue to reflect on the sites meaning. The decision to hot-dip galvanize the Woodland Gate proved to be integral to its success. Not only does the galvanizing process provide decades of protection against corrosion, but it also enhances the visual character of the project, giving the gate a finish that complements its historic setting. Robert Thomas Iron Design and Clemson University were extremely pleased with both quality and appearance, knowing that this landmark will serve as a lasting tribute for many years to come.
