This massive flood control project was designed and erected as a result of the disastrous Red River Flood in the spring of 1997. Twenty tons of galvanized steel was used to construct this 880-ft long wall.
Galvanizing was chosen as the best method to protect the permanent segment of the wall from continuous exposure to the environment and also protect the temporary sections of the wall from raging flood waters. This project includes a permanent low wall and framework for a much higher wall, which can be adjusted to a height of fourteen feet when necessary. This project was recognized by the Federal Economic Development Administration as one of the 3 largest accomplishments of the 20th Century for its reconstruction of a city's economic life.
