In 2019, recognizing the need to plan for renewable energy development, the Cape Cod Commission took action to conduct an analysis to identify appropriate sites for large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with an emphasis on existing developed or disturbed sites. The Cape Cod Fairgrounds, with over 100 acres of open land, met the criteria.
The idea of combining the solar array with covered parking was discussed and approved. As a result, 69 of the 100 acre site was allocated to the creation of a Solar Carport.

As a result, 69 of the 100 acre site was allocated to the creation of a Solar Carport.
