All the contributing leaders of this project agreed on the design and fabrication of this project, and that hot-dip galvanizing would provide the strength, aesthetic appeal, cost effectiveness and low maintenance needed to provide citizens with this facility.
In 2002 the City of Houston set out a master plan to include a 10 sq. mile district, creating 850 acres of new park land. The plan was to redevelop Buffalo Bayou into a pedestrian oriented, urban destination waterfront with mixed use development. The custom designed HDG handrails beautifully accent the 12 access points and 2 miles of trails that are illuminated by blue and white lights that change with phases of the moon.
The project has been such a success that additional phases are now planned. Houston is one of the many cities attempting to revitalize their downtown areas, so there is room for market growth. Houston is a humid environment naturally, and the rails are exposed to high pedestrian traffic making the abrasion resistance of galvanizing critical for long life. Galvanizing was chosen as the initial cost of the project was competitive, but life-cycle cost proved to be the greatest value.
