A galvanizer was contracted to galvanize over 2,700 tons (2,449 tonnes) of steel bridge deck grids. The steel grids were manufactured into concrete panels and shipped to be fitted into place on the 115-year-old bridge. Most of the decking was galvanized at night so that it would be ready the following night, off-peak time, for installation. The decision to use hot-dip galvanized steel in these decks was extremely smart. Hot-dip galvanized steel in concrete reduces the need for both short- and long-term maintenance. Other corrosion prevention systems rust inside the concrete creating expensive and time-consuming repairs.
